Colonel Bryan P. McCoy is a published author on combat leadership (The Passion of Command: The Moral Imperative of Leadership) and is the subject of the book McCoy’s Marines: Darkside to Baghdad by embedded reporter John Koopman. He is currently the Commanding Officer of the 7th Marine Regiment, Twentynine Palms, California.
He attended the CrossFit Level 1 Certification seminar in Valencia, CA on August 18-19, 2007. Coach Glassman invited him to say a few words to the participants on Sunday.
This video is his entire talk, along with Coach Glassman's introduction. The Colonel covers the four indicators of leadership (proficiency, discipline, esprit de corps, morale), along with how he found CrossFit and the impact it has made on his training. He also addresses the intangible ways in which CrossFit training supports the qualities of leadership. 12min 45sec

Tony:
The sound kicks off on Quicktime right after Coach's intro. Can you take a peek? Thanks.

The .mov plays fine for me. Try downloading the file (it's over 100MB, and your connection may struggle with that). The .wmv seems to have a problem. I'm working on it.

Ok. I rerendered the .wmv and uploaded it. I was able to download the file (onto a Windows XP PC) and view the downloaded file in Windows Media Player. If any of you have trouble playing the video directly, try this as a solution.

CrossFit is hard and it makes you hard. I can tell a person who CrossFits and one who doesn't by the way they move and talk. Like Dave Castro mentioned at the cert I went to you can see a difference in performance with a CrossFitter and one that doesn't in a combat environment. Col. McCoy simply reinforces CF validity with this video piece by comparing fight gone bad with an actual firefight. I can't wait to read his book.

Wonderful video!
My favorite quote: "There's no striking a bold leadership pose after you do Fran."
So many good pointers on leadership and life. CrossFit is amazing because it doesn't just train your body, it trains your mind and that affects everything we do, even those of us who are civilians. CrossFit has made me a better musician, a better supervisor at work, a better wife.
Thanks for the video and your service Col. McCoy and I can't wait to read the book!

I can't play the .wmv (or any of them in the new Journal) in Windows Media Player 10 when in Firefox (v3.0.1). The .mov file works fine. I get the same result intermittently in IE 6.0.2900, though sometimes on the second or third try in the same browser window it works.
The error message is "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help."
Outstanding video - I'd like to save it.

I hoped we'd get the video of that Valencia cert session. Thanks Tony.
The Colonel is a natural speaker and his book should be required reading for all law enforcement or military leaders. "Managers" will never get past the warning inside the Title Page: "Without Genuine Concern This Is All Worthless".
Col McCoy knows leadership. The Corps does a great job passing it down to its junior leaders.
His well written book helps keep my team functioning effectively and safely. Like CrossFit, simple just not easy. Thanks to Col McCoy

PS, About 10 bucks from the Marine Corps Association website.

In case you missed the link on the front page recently, the Marine Corps Association bookstore sells the Colonel's book (but Amazon doesn't):

Fantastic video, good to see marines embracing such a fundamental work out. Hearing the Col. speak reinforces that preparation is key in battling the fog of war.

Col. McCoy delivers an excellent message of how CrossFit applies to leadership, and creating a mental toughness that will silence the inner voice that tells you that you want to give up. CF is as close you can get to stressing your body, mind and will power without actually being in an ever changing, dynamic three dimensional fire fight.
Col. McCoy motivates the hell out me.
