Video Article

This is the first part of a complete training session that Vilma Siebers, 81, had with Jim Baker at CrossFit Santa Cruz Central, where he is a trainer and co-owner.

Vilma is originally from Berlin. She was a teenager during World War II, and came to California in 1952. She maintains a very active life, training with Jimmy one day a week, going on long hikes with the Sierra Club, line dancing, photographing.

In this video, there is an introductory interview before Vlima and Jimmy go on a remarkably fast-paced 1K walk (taxing the cameramen in the process). At the far point of the walk, they use the sidewalk curb as a beam for various balance drills.

Vilma,

You are amazing! After watching you, I know that I have to try a lot harder. Can't wait to see the rest of your workout. It looked like you were about to take off and leave Jimmy in the dust.

This stuff is so important to the older generation of which I am one. I feel like there are so many people out there that could use this kind of training but don't know where to get it. Hats off to Jimmy and Vilma!

Wow! I can't believe this lady is 81 years old! She moves with a lot more grace, and hikes further, than some 40 year olds I know.

Keep up the good work Jimmy and Vilma.

Wow,Vilma, you are an inspiration! I've been coaxing my 70 year old mom into some form of fitness for time now (especially since she realizes Now that standing from a sit is actually a real squat!)... and now I have you to inspire her further! You are so amazing and doing great work. Jim is such a great trainer, I really hope to get some time to dialog and work with him on training the older population. You, Vilma, are a great inspiration to everyone -- not just to the older population -- but to anyone who thinks Crossfit is too "intense" for their fitness level. Thanks for allowing that video onto crossfit. I can't wait to try some of those exercises with my mom.

Mary,

I enjoyed watching you....You were working hard. You are a tough lady and you don't give up easily. With Jim's help both of us can improve still. It will be good for our health as well as our spirit. It is all about trying, isn't it?

Take care,
Vilma
