Mike Warkentin attended the San Diego CrossFit Level 1 certification seminar on February 28 and March 1, 2009. (It happened to be the same seminar at which the Jolie Diaries were filmed. Mike is in Jolie’s group, and you can spot him in the videos.) He writes about his experience in the hopes of helping others prepare for their first Level 1 experience.

I should have got a goddamn tan.

That much was obvious from the burn on my pale Canadian face and arms after three hours of squats, presses, dead lifts, and cleans in the Southern California sunshine.

As burning flesh matched burning lungs halfway through Fran on Day 1 of the Level 1 Certification, it dawned on me that it might have been a good idea to have made a few more preparations before heading south. We train for the unknown and the unknowable, after all.

Great article Mike!

I traveled a great distance for my Level 1 cert too and had a great time (I live in PEI and attended the cert at TruFit in Calgary.

I'm not a writer but I did start up a blog to enhance my own knowledge of CrossFit and share it with others:, also wrote about my cert in one of the posts

Hope to see more writing from you in the Journal in the future.

Ditto on the nice article. Back to basics, but made me think about things differently. I think I'll start trying out the video camera too. SCARY pic!

Really enjoyed that.
I've been on the fence about attending a level 1...

This makes it much more tempting.
