CrossFit Football isn’t just for football players. Other athletes can also benefit from the program, John Welbourn and his coaches say in this video from Again Faster.

If you want to get stronger, lift heavier and do shorter duration WODs, CrossFit Football may be the program for you. But the CrossFit main site is best for overall GPP (general physical preparedness), and it’s the right choice for most athletes and for people like firefighters or Navy SEALs, who need to prepare for the unknown and unknowable.

CrossFit Football is a misnomer, says Coach Raphael Ruiz. A better name would be CrossFit Athleticism. The focus is on general skills that will make you faster and stronger, help you change direction and make your body work better. These general skills are then given a football twist, but other athletes can also get good results from the program.

John Welbourn does not believe in overcomplicated coaching cues. At the end of the day, he just wants athletes doing deadlifts to lift heavy weight off the floor.

First time I checked out CrossFit Football. Very good concept and explained in great detail. It appears that that is a great training crew (of three).

As well, I fell into lust with CFFB upon seeing it. I really like the MTuThF,metcon only Sat schedule besides the focus on strength training and metcon. I reccomended it to a friend who wanted to focus on getting bigger and he loved it and I'd reccomend it to most power sport athletes and probably the rest though I usually don't care about their sports. It also reminded me of my wrestling days and what my dad did for judo.

Part of this is because I see a similar training approach to what we do in gymnastics from my experience (take off Wed, compete quite often on Sun though sometimes Sat ). While we don't focus on strength and metcon per say, many male gymnasts are run through hard power focused short metcon events which is very common in what are called the Hungarian podkatchka and these are often employed by other men's programs in europe.

As well we have somewhat similar time domains that I have always preferred for the sports I did. Bursts of energy and downtime.

This is the 2nd time I have seen a coach in a CrossFit video (Dave Tate being the first) say, regarding the deadlift "just pull it up" or words to that effect. In my experience, that usually results in athletes basically "squatting" the weight up, that is, leading with the sternum as opposed to maintaining a constant angle at the spine vs the ground and retreating the knees. The latter cues are straight from Rippetoe and have helped me personally and the CF athletes that I coach. I'd welcome any commentary as I'm experienced in the deadlift but wouldnt say I'm an expert.

Thanks in advance.

This is one of the best Hybrid programs I have seen, great work guys... love the workouts and the concepts. I am 6'3" 240/245 and am a good CrossFitter... this fits right in with my strengths and allows me to be strong, fit and fast... I don't follow CFFB fulltime, but I do use a lot of the metcons

Thank you guys for helping us to re-recognize that life and sports are not linear. From your inspiration comes Dumbbell Lateral Lunge Thrusters,
clients "love" 'em.

How about for Police Officers? Would CrossFit Football be a better choice or would it be best to stick to the main site WODs?

For sure Jason! Crossfit Football is badass and so is Welbourn. His new site Talk to Me Johnny is also pretty sweet.

And Brock, yeah I agree that you don't want people to misunderstand but you gotta just listen to Welbourn's message; he's saying don't overcoach. Always touching the knees and maintain flat back are essential for good technique and people should autocorrect from that point. But sure, that doesn't cover the entire complexity of the lift...
