Video Article

This is the 15th installment of the Complete 2009 CrossFit Games videos, and the fourth part of the women’s competition. Here is complete coverage of the women’s row/sledge event.

The hopper model tests an athlete’s ability to perform proficiently at random physical challenges. Along those lines, the fourth event required the women to drive a three-foot-long blunt stake into evenly packed ground with an 8-lb. sledgehammer. To complicate matters, the stake drive was bookended by 500-meter rows.

Sarah Dunsmore proved quickest at the task, finishing in 5:33. Katie Hogan followed with 5:43, and Carey Kepler was right behind her at 5:50. In the first heat, Nicole Gordon smashed her finger between the handle and the stake. She stuck with it and finished in spite of the pain and the blood. Her experience, though, was a warning to the other athletes to be extra careful.

Interviews with: Kalista Pappas, Caity Matter, Lisa Ray, John Brown, Crystal McReynolds, Laura DeMarco, Annie Thorisdotter, Lauren Pryor, Cyndi Frieling, Rachel Steinbrucker, Kim Malz.

Oh and that ice bath was like a gift from heaven; I don't know how Cyndi didn't lose her mind when she hopped in because I nearly passed out!

Just wondering why there aren't any stats on the women (height, weight and age), like the men. For someone like me who is smaller and older, it would be fun, and definitely inspiring to see.

Hi Susan,

All the stats for the athletes can be found in the Official Games Program:

It is available as a free download or in printed/bound form in the CrossFit Store.

Question: Why are some of the athletes wearing what looks like black, electrical tape? Lauren Demarco is wearing it as was Big Man during the Affiliate Cup videos.
