Affiliate owners Peter Egyed and Kevin O’Malley share how CrossFit helped them beat drugs and get a new lease on life.
The CrossFit community is full of amazing triumphs. In this regular feature, the CrossFit Journal compiles the most extraordinary stories from a community built by extraordinary people.
In this edition, we feature an athlete and affiliate owner who beat amphetamines to finish sixth in the CrossFit Games, as well as another affiliate owner who used CrossFit to pull himself out of the depths of addiction.
Peter Egyed used to run from police officers, and now he finds himself teaching them about fitness at his box, CrossFit Fury. After kicking amphetamines and smoking, Egyed competed in all three editions of the CrossFit Games and turned in a great performance in 2009, finishing just behind 2008 champ Jason Khalipa.
Kevin O’Malley found that CrossFit helped him finally break a drug habit and put his life back together. CrossFit gave him hope, and now he’s trying to share that hope with others through Vagabond CrossFit.

Nicely done both of you! I workout at Kevin's affiliate Vagabond Crossfit. I was there before it moved into the much bigger place in Brockton MA, when it was still just out of a small garage; Vagabond Crossfit is a great place for beginners and competitors alike to do what they never thought was possible.
