All Over the Map: Smith, Moe and Kelsey

Closing in quickly on the 2010 CrossFit Games, Ian Wittenber is piecing together all the footage he’s shot throughout his cross-country adventure. After a short stint in Colorado, he headed north to Montana for a chat with Kelly Jo Smith. Then it was a mad dash for the coast to catch up with 2009 CrossFit Games third-place finisher Moe Kelsey and newcomer Ashleigh Moe.

Kelsey, of Mt. Baker CrossFit, is a humble giant, who brushes off last year’s finish as something that happened because the hopper tumbled his direction. Nevertheless, he was on the podium at the end of the weekend and should prove to be a force at this year’s event. While he was pre-qualified for the 2010 Games, he decided to see where he stood by competing in the Northwest Regional, finishing seventh though he wasn’t included in the final standings.

Moe, also of Mt. Baker CrossFit, was unsuccessful in her bid for the 2009 CrossFit Games, so she tightened up her program and stormed her way to first place at the Northwest Regional this year.

Smith comes to the 2010 Games by way of Polson, Mont. She finished third at the North Central Regional, besting everyone in attendance on a tough triplet including squat cleans, chest-to-bar pull-ups and box jumps.
