Bringing CrossFit to Endurance Athletes

By T.J. Murphy and Brian Mackenzie

Video Article

“I’m a journalist within the running and triathlon world, I mean that’s what I’ve been doing for the last 14 years. So one of the things for me is to explore something new with validity behind it and report on it,” says T.J. Murphy, the editor-in-chief of Competitor Magazine. Through the coaching of Brian MacKenzie of CrossFit Endurance, Murphy is exploring CrossFit and bringing it into the spotlight.

Murphy recently launched a 10-page spread on CrossFit Endurance in Triathlete Magazine with the article Go Inside One Triathlete’s Venture Into CrossFit Endurance. Murphy tells the story of Guy Petruzzelli, a CrossFit Endurance athlete who inspired him to try the program for himself.

Fed up with injury after injury from traditional training, Murphy was ready for a change.

Despite running 50-60 miles a week, Murphy says he wasn’t improving. He first found Kelly Starrett of San Francisco CrossFit for physical therapy, and the experience led him down the path to CrossFit Endurance. Since he started, he’s already made significant improvement.

“I think by him following suit with this and giving this a shot that we’re going to see a whole lot of people accept this because of who he is and what he’s done,” MacKenzie says.

Very good video. Quick question for Brian or someone that knows about Crossfit Endurance. Do they follow the main site or does Brian make up his own WODs? If he does make his own WODs are they longer metcons, shorter metcons, body weight wods, and is there much strength training? Just wondering if it still remains constantly varied or if Brian tailors it to specific athletes or to things that would they have found help long distance runners?

I'm looking forward to Honolulu's CrossFit Endurance certification in April!

I almost put this link on the main site comment field the other day, but THE WALL STREET JOURNAL had a piece on marathon and triathlon training wrecking marriages, and that therapists are seeing increased numbers of couples struggling over the time one of the partners, most often the husband, would be away running, riding, or swimming for hours on end.

Very often these men would be completely confounded by the idea of giving up or scaling back their training. The only option, as they see it, is to get up at three in the morning on work days, and that their fitness would suffer if they didn't log long hours and high mileage.

No doubt, their wives would weep with gratitude if someone explained CrossFit's approach to endurance training.

(I just tried to track down the link and could not find the WSJ piece, but Google 'Triathlon Widows.' A lot of people are talking about it.)

Aw dang! Now there ya'll go giving away all the secrets to the main stream. I was so excited to unleash my new secret weapon, CFE training, on the triathlon race circuit this summer. Now er'bodies gonna know whats up! Crap! Oh well, at least I'll have a little bit of a head start.

But seriously, thanks BMac, for showing us a better way. Since starting CF and experimenting with CFE protocals I've seen my speed and strength improve dramatically. I was, however, skeptical, considering the relative lack of volume, of my ability to endure over the long haul. I became an absolute believer after testing the program at a recent half-marathon where I PR'ed.

Very cool video. What is the drink at the end, coconut water and what else?

He does say it, but if you're not all up with the lingo, you might miss it. "Coconut water and post workout SFH protein"

Here's the link (WFS)- http://www.strongerfasterhealthier.com/product/6

You can see the video from the angle of his iPhone if you check out the TJ Murphy Chronicles (week 2) at Bmacks website - http://www.iamunscared.com/ (not always WFS).

Great little video guys. I'm a triathlete and a personal trainer, who has been participating in crossfit for the last 6moths. Focusing more on strength and the crossfit endurance WOD's has help me cut done the number of hours I train. The short sharp high intensity WOD's have improved my speed and made me feel a lot stronger in the swim, cycle and run.

I enjoy using crossfit WOD's to train my clients and explain to them the benefits of these sessions. Initially my endurance athletes were not convinced on cutting down the volume of training. Now I have an interval running group on Saturday mornings that love the format, and the numbers are slowly growing. I've now booked my level 1 crossfit endurance cert in March, which I'm really looking forward to.

I believe that crossfit endurance is the way forward for runners and triathletes. I also believe we will see a large number of triathletes joining crossfit, and hopefully their fitness will make them tough competitors in the games.

Keep up the good work Brain.

Cheers,
StreTch

Nice work, Brian. I'm glad to see CF principles applied and accepted by a greater population of athletes so they can perform their sport better.

Does anyone have a follow up of how TJ has been doing with the training since? Even though I don't doubt CFE the video leaves me with a feeling of an open loop at the end!
