With 500 members at CrossFit NYC, sometimes it’s easiest for coach Will Lanier to remember people by their favorite pie.
“If you have people introduce themselves, tell them your favorite color, your favorite ’80s sitcom, people get to know a little bit more about you,” he explains. “And when it’s like 500 members, it’s easier for me to remember, ‘Oh, that’s Joe who has two kids and likes blueberry pie.’”
Fellow coach Michael “Sully” Sullivan, a former snowboarder, says the affiliate has taken other steps, too, to ensure all CrossFit NYC members are part of the community from the start.
“We’ve grown more recently so you kind of know the members who have been here for a while, and then with the new members we’ve actually started running post-Elements WODs.”
For longtime athlete Lauren Klingsberg, CrossFit was not just a way for her to lose weight but also a place to fit in.
“One thing that I’ve really loved here that you don’t get in a lot of other gyms is that there’s so many really strong and fit women,” she says. “It’s nice to walk into a place and not really look so weird.”
