Audrey Tannant has been playing the trumpet since she was 9 years old. Now, as an adult, she drives four hours once a month to play principal trumpet in the Okanagan Symphony in British Columbia.
CrossFit, she says, has helped her improve her musical skill.
“It’s crossed over into my performing. It’s crossed over into my practice. It’s pretty much all of it. CrossFit is parallel to performing,” says Tannant, who lives in Vancouver and has been CrossFitting for nearly two years.
“You gotta have your awareness, and your body’s gotta be ready to go, and your brain’s gotta be mentally prepared to just pick up and nail something without having any time to kind of fiddle-fart around.”
She says a light bulb went off when she first heard of CrossFit’s 10 fitness domains.
“That’s trumpet playing, that’s playing in an orchestra, that’s being excellent at a craft,” Tannant explains. “That’s just excellence.”
For her, CrossFit has allowed her to enjoy practice and be in the moment, she says.
“And then everything else in life just becomes a whole lot easier,” Tannant adds.
