Over the course of one month, Guerrilla Fitness raised $18,000 for CrossFit’s Hope for Kenya project, which is focused on improving the conditions of those living in a 250-square-mile rural area surrounding Mombasa, Kenya.

“Hope for Kenya is really fundamentally changing an entire area—being able to offer water, food for these people, but (also) education, and that being something that is really the difference of life and death for the Kenyans,” says Karianne Dickson, co-owner of Guerrilla Fitness in New Jersey.

Through the Hope for Kenya fundraiser workout—also being done by dozens upon dozens of boxes worldwide—the affiliate hopes to surpass $18,000, she adds.

“Constantly moving upward as the minutes tick by,” Dickson says.

Guerrilla Fitness member Susan DeFreitas called the fundraiser workout—a 12-minute AMRAP of 50 air squats, 30 push-ups and 15 pull-ups—“excellent.”

“I think it’s really important to constantly think outside yourself and (of) other people,” she explains. “My husband and I both traveled to Africa, and we’ve seen poverty and the struggles that people have.”
