On Episode 323 of CrossFit Radio, host Justin Judkins interviewed Gavin Turner, a CrossFit athlete who is hoping to summit Mt. Everest in May. Also on the show was well-known Games competitor Josh Bridges. This episode was webcast on March 26, 2014.
3:31 Gavin Turner returned to the show to discuss his upcoming expedition to Mt. Everest (listen to Part 1 here). He talked about the brutality of the climb and described why about half of the 60-day expedition will be spent at base camp. He explained how he’ll complete two rotations of climbing higher and higher—moving up to Camp 3 at 24,500 feet in elevation—in preparation for the final ascent to the summit. Turner detailed how the entire expedition is mentally exhausting and how CrossFit has prepared him for the challenge. He plans to spend anywhere from five to 40 minutes on the summit, and he spoke about the dangers of the trip down from the highest point on Earth.
20:00 Josh Bridges recently faced off with Scott Panchik immediately after the announcement of Open Workout 14.4 in Seattle, Wash. Bridges described his busy work schedule with the U.S. military and how he has to adjust his training around it. He said he isn’t completely on track at present but is still feeling confident. Bridges loved the atmosphere at CrossFit Bellevue for the live broadcast of 14.4, as well as the workout itself, and he said he actually enjoys doing workouts shortly after hearing their details. Finally, he explained how he pushes himself when the pain sets in.
