The 2014 Mid Atlantic Regional went down in Fairfax, Virginia, during the third week of regional competition. The region ultimately sent one man and one woman to the CrossFit Games for the sixth consecutive time.

After two weeks of competition in which multiple CrossFit Games veterans failed to qualify, SoCal athletes took the floor at one of the most hotly contested regionals.
Favored to win Event 1—a 1-rep-max hang snatch—Games runner-up Lindsey Valenzuela faltered with 185 lb. overhead, surprising fans.
“I didn’t like that I missed the 185,” Valenzuela said after the event, “but that’s the way weightlifting works that’s why it’s kind of a fun sport.”

The Africa Regional has come a long way since 2009, when it was held outside on a grass field. In 2014, it was held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa.

CrossFit feels slightly different in Asia, according to Adrian Bozman.
“The spirit here is ridiculous. People are just so fired up,” said Bozman, head judge at the Asia Regional in Korea. “It kinda reminds me of the early days at The Ranch.”
He added: “It’s very community minded, and it’s awesome.”
Candice Ford, formerly Candice Howe, was the regional’s 2011 champion. Even she was distracted by the excitement of seeing old friends.

The North Central Regional was certainly filled with surprises.
After Day 1, Games veteran Alex Nettey sat atop the Leaderboard in a spot many had reserved for Kyle Kasperbauer, who finished third at the CrossFit Games in 2012. On their heels was rookie Jacob Heppner.
“I’d like to make it, but I’m not gonna place money on myself,” Heppner said with a smile at the end of Day 1.
Your thoughts can derail your performance—but only if you let them.

“I can’t wait until this is over. I can’t sleep the night before a competition.”
“The countdown: There’s no turning back. These are the most stressful 10 seconds of my day.”
“The clock gives me instant anxiety, and it takes me a minute or two to get my focus back.”
“This is exciting!”

“I love to compete!”

During this year’s South East Regional, Noah Ohlsen found himself in a familiar spot: first place at the end of Day 1. But in 2013, he slipped in the days that followed to end his weekend in seventh place overall.
“I’m not gonna let that happen this year,” the 23-year-old said as the first day of competition ended in 2014.
