After two weeks of competition in which multiple CrossFit Games veterans failed to qualify, SoCal athletes took the floor at one of the most hotly contested regionals.

Favored to win Event 1—a 1-rep-max hang snatch—Games runner-up Lindsey Valenzuela faltered with 185 lb. overhead, surprising fans.

“I didn’t like that I missed the 185,” Valenzuela said after the event, “but that’s the way weightlifting works … that’s why it’s kind of a fun sport.”

After two years of familiar names topping the Latin America Regional Leaderboard, a new man, woman and team will represent the region at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games.

This year’s regional was held in Santiago, Chile, and preparation for the event in the rapidly growing region was not without obstacles, according to Competition Director Cristobal Mardone.

“It’s not been easy, but we are gonna make it, and you are gonna see how we have fun… Continue Reading

The Africa Regional has come a long way since 2009, when it was held outside on a grass field. In 2014, it was held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“We had a pretty small rig ... even smaller than the warm-up rig we have this year,” said Africa Regional Director Jobst Olschewski. “In (2009), we had to basically provide all of the equipment locally and bring it over to the venue.”

The Story in Asia

By Mike Koslap

Video Article

CrossFit feels slightly different in Asia, according to Adrian Bozman.

“The spirit here is ridiculous. People are just so fired up,” said Bozman, head judge at the Asia Regional in Korea. “It kinda reminds me of the early days at The Ranch.”

He added: “It’s very community minded, and it’s awesome.”

Candice Ford, formerly Candice Howe, was the regional’s 2011 champion. Even she was distracted by the excitement of seeing old friends.

“I love that we can be here and… Continue Reading

The Story in North Central

By Michael Dalton

Video Article

The North Central Regional was certainly filled with surprises.

After Day 1, Games veteran Alex Nettey sat atop the Leaderboard in a spot many had reserved for Kyle Kasperbauer, who finished third at the CrossFit Games in 2012. On their heels was rookie Jacob Heppner.

“I’d like to make it, but I’m not gonna place money on myself,” Heppner said with a smile at the end of Day 1.

On the women’s side, 2012 and 2013 regional winner … Continue Reading

During this year’s South East Regional, Noah Ohlsen found himself in a familiar spot: first place at the end of Day 1. But in 2013, he slipped in the days that followed to end his weekend in seventh place overall.

“I’m not gonna let that happen this year,” the 23-year-old said as the first day of competition ended in 2014.

It wasn’t easy. He had a slew of capable athletes giving chase; among them was Elijah Muhammad… Continue Reading

Although it shared its weekend with four other events, the Central East Regional was the show-stopper. The competitors’ names alone were enough to pique the interest of even the casual CrossFit Games observer: Julie Foucher, Rich Froning, Marcus Hendren, Graham Holmberg, Michelle Kinney and Scott Panchik.

“My professional opinion is that Rich—no matter what happens—is just unstoppable,” said commentator Chase Ingraham, who is also a member of CrossFit’s Level 1… Continue Reading

The Story in Canada East

By Jeremy Podlog

Video Article

Sharing its weekend with four other events around the world—Australia, Central East, Europe and North West—the Canada East Regional proved to be an equally riveting show.

Camille Leblanc-Bazinet and Michele Letendre rekindled their rivalry, and Letendre found herself on the edge of qualifying for the CrossFit Games again amid ever-growing competition.
